Game Boy Advance

GBA 2001 /gba

32‑bit Nintendo handheld with SNES‑class 2D graphics and full GB/GBC backward compatibility.

Overview

The **Game Boy Advance (GBA)** is a 32‑bit handheld game console developed and manufactured by Nintendo as the successor to the Game Boy Color. Released in 2001 (Japan and North America) and 2001–2002 worldwide, it represented a major leap in portable hardware, bringing performance roughly comparable to a stripped‑down Super Nintendo with enhanced effects, expanded color, and substantially higher CPU speeds. Powered by a 32‑bit ARM7TDMI CPU alongside an 8‑bit Game Boy–compatible core, the GBA could run both native Advance titles and legacy Game Boy and Game Boy Color games via hardware backward compatibility. Its graphics system featured multiple background layers with rotation and scaling, sprite support, and a 15‑bit color palette, enabling detailed 2D visuals and advanced effects such as parallax scrolling and pseudo‑3D. The system used mask ROM cartridges, typically from 4 MB up to 32 MB and beyond for late releases, some including extra hardware such as real‑time clocks or tilt sensors. Audio combined simple but flexible direct sound channels with legacy Game Boy–style tone and noise channels. The original GBA’s reflective LCD lacked a backlight, leading to the later **Game Boy Advance SP** and **Game Boy Micro**, which added frontlit/backlit screens and redesigned form factors while remaining fully compatible. The GBA became home to a large and varied library, including original series like **Golden Sun** and **Advance Wars**, as well as high‑quality ports and remakes of **Super Nintendo–era** games and classic franchises such as **Pokémon**, **Castlevania**, and **Mario**. It also pioneered several link features: multiplayer via link cable, connectivity with the GameCube, and accessories like the e‑Reader. The GBA’s architecture and library had a lasting influence on handheld game design and paved the way for the Nintendo DS family.
