Sega 32X
32-bit dual-CPU add-on for Sega Genesis/Mega Drive with enhanced 2D/early 3D graphics.
Overview
The **Sega 32X** is an add-on for the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive, released in late 1994 as a low-cost entry into 32‑bit gaming. Codenamed "Project Mars," it plugged into the Genesis cartridge slot and provided additional processing power and graphics capabilities while relying on the base console for audio, I/O, and backward compatibility. Hardware-wise, the 32X contains **two Hitachi SH-2 32-bit RISC CPUs** running in parallel, along with its own frame buffer, video hardware, and dedicated RAM. It can overlay or replace the Genesis video output, enabling higher color depths, simple texture‑mapped polygons, and more sophisticated scaling and rotation than the stock Genesis could achieve. Games were distributed on dedicated 32X cartridges that required both the Genesis and the 32X unit to operate. Despite its promising specifications for the price, the 32X was commercially short‑lived. Its launch overlapped with Sega’s own Saturn and the emerging 32‑bit CD‑based consoles, confusing consumers and fragmenting Sega’s market. Fewer than 40 retail games were released, including notable titles like *Virtua Racing Deluxe*, *Virtua Fighter*, *Doom*, and *Knuckles’ Chaotix*. Today the 32X is remembered as an ambitious but poorly timed stopgap, interesting to collectors and developers for its dual‑CPU architecture and as a case study in mid‑1990s console design and strategy.
Tech Specs
From `platforms.techSpecs`
- audio
- Provided primarily by base Sega Genesis/Mega Drive (YM2612 FM + SN76489 PSG); 32X adds PWM mixing for extra channels/effects.
- cpu
- Dual Hitachi SH-2 32-bit RISC CPUs @ ~23 MHz each, running in parallel; works alongside Genesis 68000 @ 7.67 MHz and Z80 @ 3.58 MHz.
- gpu
- 32X VDP with frame buffer; 2× custom VDP chips handling bitmap layers, scaling, simple texture-mapped polygons, and color expansion; overlays/combines with Genesis VDP output.
- media
- ROM cartridges (32X-specific) inserted into 32X, which itself plugs into Genesis/Mega Drive cartridge slot.
- ram
- 32X: 256 KB main DRAM, 256 KB frame buffer DRAM, 256 KB ROM space; uses Genesis system RAM (64 KB) and VRAM (64 KB) as well.
- releaseYear
- 1994
- resolution
- Common modes: 320×224 or 256×224 (progressive), with up to 32,768 on-screen colors from a 15-bit palette; various VDP modes for frame-buffered 2D/3D rendering.
