NEC’s PC Engine/TurboGrafx-16 with CD-ROM add-on, an early pioneer of CD-based console gaming.

Overview

The TurboGrafx-16 (known as PC Engine in Japan) with CD-ROM add-on was one of the earliest home consoles to embrace optical media for games. Developed by NEC and Hudson Soft, the base hardware launched in 1987 (PC Engine, Japan) and 1989 (TurboGrafx-16, North America), with the CD-ROM² System following in 1988. This combination offered arcade-quality 2D graphics and high-fidelity Red Book audio years before most competitors. At its core, the system uses a Hudson-designed HuC6280 8-bit CPU derived from the 65C02, augmented with powerful custom video hardware. Despite the 8-bit CPU, its graphics architecture is effectively “16‑bit class,” featuring a 16-bit video bus, a generous color palette, hardware scrolling, and support for many on-screen sprites—enabling smooth shooters, fighters, and platformers comparable to early 16‑bit systems. The CD-ROM² and later Super CD-ROM² formats expanded storage capacity dramatically beyond HuCard cartridges, allowing large multi-stage games with voiced dialogue, animated cutscenes, and CD-quality soundtracks. Enhanced BIOS and additional RAM on the CD units (plus the optional System Cards and Arcade Card) enabled more advanced graphics, larger levels, and arcade-perfect conversions. The platform’s library is especially strong in shoot 'em ups, action platformers, and arcade ports, with standout CD titles that showcased cinematic presentation. Though it never reached the market share of the Sega Genesis or Super NES in the West, the PC Engine/TurboGrafx-16 CD ecosystem holds a significant place in console history as a pioneer of CD-based gaming, and it remains highly regarded among enthusiasts for its distinct hardware design and unique software catalog.
