Mother 1+2
Mother 1+2 is a compilation of the first two installments of the Mother series, MOTHER and MOTHER 2: GIYGAS STRIKES BACK! (known outside Japan as EarthBound Beginnings and EarthBound, respectively). Mother tells the story of Ninten, a 12-year-old boy who journeys around the world using his psychic powers to collect eight melodies in order to save the planet from an evil race of mind-controlling aliens. Mother 2 tells the story of Ness, a young boy who journeys around the world also using psychic powers to collect eight melodies in order to save the future from an alien of pure evil, intending to sentence all of reality to the horror of eternal darkness. The version of Mother included in this bundle has a special item that can be used to change the difficulty of the game, since it lessens the amount of random encounters and modifies the overall status of the enemies.

About The Retro Game
Mother 1+2 on Game Boy Advance bundles two landmark RPGs into a single portable experience, preserving their quirky charm while adding subtle refinements. You guide Ninten and Ness on separate, globe‑spanning adventures, building parties of oddball allies, using PSI (psychic) powers instead of traditional magic, and navigating turn‑based battles that mix humor, danger, and surreal enemies. The compilation keeps the signature “eight melodies” structure of both games, encouraging exploration, backtracking, and careful attention to the world’s music and lore.
Originally released on Famicom and Super Famicom, these games helped redefine what console RPG storytelling could be, long before many genre staples became mainstream. Their contemporary, small‑town setting, satirical take on American culture, and offbeat writing made them stand out in an era dominated by medieval fantasy. On Game Boy Advance, Mother 1+2 consolidates that history into a more accessible format; the first Mother even gains an optional difficulty‑adjusting item that reduces random encounters and tweaks enemy stats, making a notoriously demanding adventure more approachable.
Technically, bringing two large RPGs onto a single GBA cartridge while retaining their distinctive visual style, battle systems, and soundtrack was a notable feat. The ports preserve the expressive pixel art and iconic music, whose playful themes and eerie battle tracks have influenced countless indie RPGs and fan projects. Mother 1+2 helped sustain and expand the series’ cult following in Japan, serving as a gateway for new players and a definitive portable edition for longtime fans, further cementing Mother’s place as one of the most beloved and unconventional RPG series in gaming history.
